Understanding that businesses have peculiarities, challenges, etc. it becomes important to develop strategies and procedures for managing the processes of such businesses.

Developing a system of managing internal and external processes is key to business growth and sustainability.

What is business Management?

Business management is the coordination and organization of business activities and procedures. Leading people to harmonize with the vision and goals of your business will require management across the board both internally and externally.

A business is a multifaceted entity and demands research, planning, structuring and management for proper execution. For any business to strive, effective management comes in.

Managing a business is all encapsulating, it embraces a holistic approach, cutting across the business to the people, no business management is complete outside managing people because the people is the oxygen powering and driving the business.

Business management constitutes a variety of roles and skills that work together to ensure operational efficiency and organizational success.

To effectively manage any business, here are a few things you must put in place:

  • Understand your business: Having an understanding of your business goes beyond having a business name and a product or service you offer. Understanding your business deals with internalizing the vision, the objectives and integrating them into all the processes of your business. It involves an in-depth grasp of the market demand, the challenges, and risk(s) involved in the business.
  • Develop a management framework: Beyond starting a business, there is a need to develop management procedures to effectively run a business. Business operations and management span beyond just having a great idea, it entails developing management procedures that will power the business. Business management procedures capture every area of the business – administration, finance and accounting, production, sales, and marketing.
  • Organizational structure and Recruitment processes: Managing a business will require structuring the business, drawing up organizational procedures and strategies, and developing recruitment strategies and the organization workflow. This will help in the hiring procedures and in determining the quality of people the organization hires. As the business grows, the need for more employees increases because the business will depend on the employees to an extent to thrive. Adequate human resources management is needed to handle and engage employees for effectiveness and productiveness.
  • Customer Satisfaction and Retention: Customer satisfaction and retention is another important aspect of business management, every business has its target audience in view whilst starting up, this target audience can be called customers, these are the people that the services/products are designed for and effective business management will entail having systems and processes that will ensure that they are satisfied and retained, this way the continuity of the business will be guaranteed.
  • Set up an Effective Communication Mechanism: Communication is important in all forms of relationships, effective business management will entail opening up channels of communication both internally and externally.

The internal communication system handles communication within the business (employer and employees) while the external communication handles that of the business and its customers.

These communication channels make it easy to receive observations and feedback.
